Europa 11 Red Watch Day 2

August 8^th 2011, Halmstad – Europa

I’m Fraser, today I arrived, slightly later than planned - due to Ryanair not flying on a Sunday from Scotland to Sweden - but I made it just in time for lunch. So many people to meet, so I haven’t quite learned every name yet but I’m sure I will get there. The afternoon was spent around Halmstad bay in the ‘Parade of Sails’ where all the ships show off their impressive repertoire of sails, Europa of course looking fine and beautiful. Most ships have moved onto the next port but we returned to Halmstad to go on a short tour of the city. Our local trainee crewmates took us to some historical city sights as well as some local graffiti parks and youth centres. It’s a quiet, unassuming kind of city but a very pleasant one. Unfortunately the weather has been pretty terrible, fairly typical of this part of Sweden we’ve been told, but who cares? The worse the weather, the better the sailing! Dinner saw me have two massive helpings of meat, stew-like vegetables and rice. You could say the food is rather good. I’ll learn more about the sails and the ropes tomorrow when we head off, and perhaps be-friend the ship’s dog. I should probably learn his/her name!

I am Miguel and I am from Portugal. I live in Sintra, a beautiful town surround by nature and lots of monuments with interesting stories to tell. Note: in Sintra we have good sweets (don’t forget these names: Travesseiros and Queijadas).

Before I was on board I visited London and after that I went to Copenhagen, both with a large diversity of cultural and enthusiastic places and people to meet.

I have been on board since yesterday (7^th August) and I am loving this amazing adventure. Why? I will explain. The crew are really friendly and we help each other every moment of everyday. The meals on board are excellent, and the beds and the boat, I can describe in just three words - very very good.

I have seen many beautiful tall ships; it seems I am in the middle of Pirates of Caribbean movie. It is awesome.

Today (8^th August) I tried lots of things on board, such as pulling the ropes, tying some knots and washing the floor. In conclusion, I have started to try the real life on board. More one thing, we walked trough Halmstad with great tourist guides (the Swedish crew).

Blue Watch: day 2 Europa 11: Parade of Sail, Games and tour of Halmstad

Day 2- Woken up at 7 for a quick breakfast and games. Borrowed the dog’s ball and within 5 minutes it was at the bottom of the harbour. Then we played a quick and confusing knot game followed by dinner. Then we had to make ready to depart climbed bowsprit and untied the sails, unfortunately we untied one to many (the flying jib) and had to spend another 10 minutes figuring out how to tie it back up. We then followed the tall ships out of the harbour and then prepared and set the main sails. We sailed approximately three nautical miles (nm) out to the peninsula at this point we turned around and headed back to Halmstad. On the short voyage we learnt how to brace the yards and how to correctly handle the ropes to hoist the sails. Working together in our watches (with a lot of help from the crew) we managed to get safely back to Halmstad where the sails had to properly put away and the ship moored. Operating the ropes, especially the mooring line (Parking break), was hard work but fun even though it started to rain. Dan then climbed the rigging all the way up to the royal (the 2^nd to top sail) and had to make sure the gaskets were put on and the sai was tucked away nicely. Once we were moored a few of the trainees from Halmstad showed the rest of us around. We visited sculptures one of which was designed by Picasso and was situated within Picassos park. We also saw a new library which cost 6 million euro and a youth centre which was well equipped for many activities such as dancing, filmmaking and arts and crafts and a pool table. Then we saw the graffiti park which is one of the only places where graffiti is allowed and is actually encouraged. After this we learnt a Swedish dance which was about a frog to celebrate spring time and I am sure the video will be on youtube (oh dear) – here’s the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFn-cj8dTVQ . Finally we headed home to the ship and had diner and chilled out for the evening singing sea shanties such as the last shanty.

Day one

After two days traveling, we arrived in Halmstad train station, in order to get to the ship Europa we had to “borrow” a super-market trolley to carry our huge luggage.

The first hours on board were spent meeting the other trainees and getting to know the ship along with our cabins. To break the ice created by the different nationalities the crew organized a few games including the “Human Knot” which is the contrary of Twister where you try to unravel a knot made by holding hands with each other.

Day 1- Our adventure started yesterday, the 7^th of August 2011. We got up early in the morning and took the car to Halmstad. The weather was awesome in the afternoon and the harbour was showing it’s best side. A lot of people were admiring hundreds of tall ships. We got on Europa and met the crew and all the trainers. It was exciting to meet so many people from different countries. We made some funny games to know each other, but it was hard to remember all the different names. For dinner we got some weird Dutch food, a bit different from the Italian food! In the evening we went out together and listened to the music and the shows they had arranged. At midnight when we came back to the boat we ended the day with amazing fireworks at the seaside.

BARK EUROPA

The bark EUROPA has sailed nearly every ocean. This three-master is equipped with a total of 30 sails and has participated in many Tall Ship Races since 1994. With great success: In 2000 she became first in one of the legs and second in the overall Transatlantic match series. Last summer the EUROPA joined the Tall Ships Races at the Great Lakes. And this winter she can be found in Antarctica again. In short, a true world traveller or ocean wanderer!

The EUROPA was built in 1911 in Hamburg and first named 'Senator Brockes'. For years it served as a lightship on the Elbe. Harry Smidt bought the ship in 1986 and moved it to Holland to have it rebuilt into a bark (a square – rigged three-mast); the EUROPA. Since 1994 the completely renovated EUROPA sails the oceans as trainee ship.

YOUR TEAM and CREW

During this trip you’ll be sailing with trainees from all over Europe. As well as sailing, you and the other trainees will organise games, national dinners, European song festivals, or whatever you would like to do. Meet people from other cultures, enjoy the differences and see the similarities between the countries. You will make friends for the rest of your life.

The bark EUROPA is certified by the Dutch Shipping Inspection Annually the vessel gets a survey, from machinery hull up till her rigging. The Bark EUROPA complies with the latest safety regulations, complying with not only national regulations, but also EU and SOLAS regulations. The same goes for her crew, that, according to the demands of the Dutch Shipping Inspection, will have followed the necessary STCW safety trainings and/or nautical education. All three of its captains, Klaas, Rob and Eric, have sailed all around the world and are really experienced sailors. They have sailed many Tall Ships Races during their career. Before departure you will have three instructions, life on board, safety and deck, all explaining you how you can safely work and live on board. The crew will be from all over the world, the working and instruction language spoken on board will be English. A ships doctoris always part of the permanent crew of the EUROPA.

ACCOMMODATION

The classical mahogany deckhouse, teak deck and floors and the authentic details take you back to the 20th century. The comfortable cabins, eleven in total, are well equipped with a private lavatory and

shower. De berths are divided into two two-person cabins, five four person cabins and four six-person cabins. Furthermore you will find a sick-bay, a deck lounge with bar, a dining saloon and a relaxing reading corner. Board this ship and experience the adventurous nautical atmosphere.

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

· The voyage starts 7th of August at 17.00 hours on board the Bark Europa in the harbour of Halmstad, Sweden. When you arrive you will get to know the ship, mentors, crew and the other trainees. After a warm welcome, the Captain’s introduction and the safety briefing, you will have time to spend a pleasant evening on board or in Halmstad. Should your travel schedule cause you to arrive before 17.00 hours, you are welcome to store your bags aboard and have a look around in town.

· The next day there will be extra time to explore Halmstad. The trainees of Halmstad will prepare e special program. The next day the ship will leave the harbour to go to Hamburg. You will be introduced with working on the deck of the ship. Together with the crew, you will get the ship ready to leave the harbour. After a few days of fantastic sailing and also daily games you will arrive in Hamburg, Germany.

· The ship will stay in Hamburg for a few day. During the stay in Hamburg you can enjoy everything the city offers. There will also be a big party in order to celebrate the 100 years existence of the Bark Europe. The party will be organized by you and the other trainees. You can invite inhabitants of the city of Hamburg you have met during the day with a special game.

· After a few days in the harbour of Hamburg it’s time to move on. The trip will continue to Harlingen (The Netherlands) but not before you have seen the harbour of Cuxhaven (Germany). The trainees of Cuxhaven will organise a tour trough the harbour. During one of the last days the ship will anchor in the harbour of Terschelling or Texel, both islands are part of the Wadden islands from the Netherlands. On the Islands you can walk or cycle around and see the beautiful landscape. There is also a nice seafarers museum with things they found the last 100 years on the beach.

· At sea you will be divided into three watches; the watch members will be from different nationalities; so speaking English will be required! Your language skills will improve every minute. During your watch you will be responsible for the ship, during the day, and during the night. You will learn to set the sails, to steer the vessel, to help cook the meals and to clean the ship inside and out. You do this during your watch, and when necessary outside your watch. It is fun to work together and take care of the ship. It is a challenge to sail fast, but also to have a good atmosphere and fun on board.

· Life at sea can be hectic at times when the wind gets stronger or calms down, but there is always plenty of time to relax and read a book or sing together while the sun is setting. Life on a Tall Ship is great! Our goal is to organise group activities at least once a day – varying from playing games to singing – so everybody gets to know each other really well and feels part of one big team. There is nothing too crazy for us; you are welcome to share your ideas!

· Your voyage will end on Friday the 20th of August in the harbour of Harlingen, the Netherland. You will look back at a life changing-experience!

Tall Ship Adventures in 2011

Young people in the UK have the opportunity this summer to join an exciting International Youth Exchange aboard a tall ship.

Join the Lord Nelson for this special Youth in Action exchange program. This year the voyage will start in Aberdeen (UK). From there the voyage will continue to Amsterdam (NL) and will finish in Hartlepool (UK). Depending on weather, tides and wind the ship may visit another port.

International Exchange
Besides the professional crew, 7 trainees per country can participate with all kind of different physical disabilities. A total of 35 trainees with nationalities from Belgium, France, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands will board the Lord Nelson to experience this special trip together.

During this trip you'll be sailing with trainees from all over Europe. Together you will sail and do more! As well as sailing, you and the other trainees will organise games, national dinners, European song festivals, or whatever you would like to do. Meet people from other cultures, enjoy the differences and see the similarities between the countries. You may make friendships to last for the rest of your
life

Sponsorship
This trip is sponsored by the European organisations 'Youth in Action' . Therefore we can offer you a reduced price. This includes full board and excludes transportation from and to the ports and drinks at the bar. In addition, 70% of transportation is being paid for, so you only have to pay 30% of this amount.

Costs
The trip takes 13 days and starts on the 30th of July and will end at the 12th of August 2011.

The normal price for this voyage is € 1675 but for people aged between 15-25 years there is a special price of €1195 The price includes food and accommodation on the ship. Excluding transfers.

The Great Egg Drop 2010

Following the race the trainees were presented with the Egg Drop Challenge. The brief was simple:

The challenge is to transport a raw egg from the platform on the fore mast as far back on the ship as possible without the egg breaking.

• You may use any materials aboard the ship, however you must have permission of the person responsible for them (eg: Bosun, Engineer, Cook or the Captain)

• There is a good chance that your egg may end up overboard – so ensure that you only use things you can afford to loose

• The egg and it’s protective packaging must be thrown from the platform and can not be attached to any part of the ship, or another person

• Teams should be between 5 & 7 people and as international as possible!

• Before the egg drop, each team will give a presentation about the science of their design – points will be awarded for the best presentation
(to be the best you should include all of your group and make it as funny as possible)

• Finally to win the egg must be whole and raw when it is collected from the deck (this will be tested!)

Today it was a very hard day because we had to woke up early, we had watch at 8.00 – 12.00, so early breakfast at 07.30! There were big waves. In our watch rain a lot. With the captain end the Bulgarian crew we set all the sail. During the others watch i sleep end sleep again because I’m very tired.

The lunch and dinner were very good today! The dinner was a Swedish traditional meal, it was composed of potatoes end meatballs.

After dinner there was a Swedish presentation, we were actually on watch (18.00 – 20.00), but we were released so we could go down for Swedish presentation. The Swedish presentation was very good Carl (the mentor) and the others Swedish trainees told us a lot about their country.

Now (21.00) Iven and Filippo play the guitar and we sing all together. This was all for now!

14th August: White Watch Update

Finally no rain, no clouds and millions of stars around in the night sky during our night watch. Some of us sneaked into the bridge and got some sleep while others were just sitting and counting falling stars (in fact, we managed to count 62 falling stars during the whole watch). To cheer us up some of us sang their national songs. We also played a 'Horse Race' game when we were really cold. In the end we started to make up a story sentence by sentence about a sailing ship and a whale crashing into it.

During all of the time we had a lightning flashes somewhere far away, but fortunately we didn't get into that storm.

Our midday watch also was really calm and sunny (first time during this voyage). Weather got a bit more windy, so we managed to speed up a bit. We set the outer jib which had been ripped during yesterday's storm, and which the captain has now fixed.

Christiana and Caroline taught others knots they knew and afterwards we played a game where two people are tied together and they need to untie themselves.

We also had a discussion about immigrants integration and it's problems in various countries. We finally come up to a conclusion, that even if a government work to integrate immigrants to the country it will be very difficult unless the immigrants want that by themselves.

11th August: White Watch Blog Update

Erika, White watch, 11th of August

Today was very interesting day. Firstly, it was the day when our race began. But before it, the captain and all crew gave us instructions about safety on the ship. Now we all know what to do if we need to abondon the ship or if someone fall of board. We know how serious it is, but it was really funny to see Emma with big red safety jacket. By the way, today is her birthday, so we sang to her and everyone signed on a card, so she get congratulations from all of us.

Also, my watch was the first of our watches who began our „watch systém¨. It was very interesting to help crew with rigging, pulling the ropes. I know more about Kaliakra`s sails and how to do things which crew must do. Now, when Im writing this we have our last watch and it will end at the midnight. We‘re having stormy weather, but captain and the crew are determined about changing sails and I hope we‘ll win the race! And, also we have a starry night, so stars are steering our tall ship and we’re enjoying our time on deck!

11th August Update

Today the Tall Ship Race was began.

We leave the dock at 9:00 a.m. and we set on the start line.

For first we set all the sails all toghether and after the lunch time, at 4:00 p.m., we cut the start line and we began our travel.

We started the normaly watching turn, today I had two turn, first from 12:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m., second from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m.

In the last one we has a good wind and the boat sailing very well.

The weater is not very good, but we were prepared.

Today is a very good first sailing day.

The day started pretty good. I woke up at 7:30 and i went right away to breakfast. We had some ham, a boiled egg, a block of cheese, two waffles and a cup of hot tea. After the delicious meal my watch started and unfortenately i was 5 minutes late so i had to apology to the whole blue watch for being late but it was fun.

Our watch was supposed to be 4 hours and luckily the weathers was nice to us. The wind was not very strong which made our work easier. We did not have to raise the sails and pull the ropes every 5 minutes so we had a lot of free time. We spent it very usefully, though. We did a little bit of a dictionary game and tought ourselves to some new words and frases in different languages . For instance i learned how to say good morning in portugish (Bom Dia), Italián (Buon Giorno) and lithuanian (Kavas Rytas)

And off course, since everything is happening in our watch, we also had to tack. Since the wind was not strong enough for the ship we had to stack the sails in the opposite direction so that we could move the ship faster. It was work for more than 12 people but we managed to do it alone with our own watch (White watch rules!). After our watch was over we all went inside and as for me i had 4 nice hours of sleep. Then i woke up once again and had my sweedish dinner meal which was very tasty. After the dinner we had a watch again but this one was only 2 hours. And during the watch we could go down to the mess, because of the Swedish presentation!

14th August White Watch Blog Update

Daily log.

Today was a tough day, we had 3 watches off 4 hours. So we had to wake up at 11.30 for our first watch, it was the first time we had the watch from 12 to 4 o’clock. It’s verry weird to wake up in the middle off the night, be awake for four hours, and then to go back to bed again. We could only sleep until 8, because we were supposed to have breakfast at that time. We all arrived at the table with a sleepy head and in our pyjamas. After we ate some braed we went back to bed. It’s been a rough night because we had to wake up every few hours.

Luckily the weather had changed dramatically, the wind wasn’t that strong, we were running like 5 knots, and even the sun appeared from behind the clouds. Everybody took there wet cloths out and hung them arround the ship to dry.

We started to make our own sailing-videomovie. It’s on the song off the Black Eyed Peas, I got a feeling. So we sort off made the storyboard for our movie. During the day the deck was filled with people laying in the sun, listhening to some music and generally enjoying the good weather.

In our seccond watch we had some lessons on how to tie knots and stuff, so Christiana learned everybody how to tie an eightknot, and a reefknot, a bowline, and I can’t remember the names of the other knots. Milan and me helped her a little because we also knew the knots. We also played the integrationgame, which I missed becouse off the videoclip.

We helped the captain and his crew to set the bom bram kliver, because the other one ripped in the storm yesterday.

Then we got the Italian dinner, which was pretty good. They made spaghetti carbonara and tiramisu for desert. They even sang the national anthem after thein presentation.

Now it’s the last watch of today, from 8 to 12, it’s 8 o’clock and I’m getting pretty tired. We played a game, Who am I. We came up with a famous person and 1 of the trainees had to guess who it is by asking questions. We could only answer by yes or no!

For the rest the watch was quit, the sunset was verry beautiful and everybody from the watch before us stayed to watch and take pictures.

Sunday 15th Blog Update: Red Watch and the Shop

Good afternoon everybody who is reading this blog!

Sunday 15^thof August started 03.30 in the morning with the sun rising from the dark. The weather was nice till the end of the watch, so we just enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing time on the deck. Today everyone is looking forward for the Czech dinner in the evening.

Well, today the idea of establishing a sweet shop was remembered and at last started to gain shape. For my interest I was chosen to run the shop which I find quite exciting. So, I had to prepare a poster and the prices for the shop. I especially enjoy the name of the shop. A big challenge for me is getting used to selling in Euro’s as I’m a Lithuanian currently studying in the UK. The selling list is not so large but long enough to make life sweeter on the boat. Prices are set to be reachable for everyone. The best part is that the money collected will be used for the Goodbye Party! It will contribute towards organizing it and buying some stuff for it. I am really looking forward for the first of the shop. I want to see how it goes and if people are interested in buying some sweets from the local shop. I hope we won’t have any problems with change J

Voyage is over - a new crew join the ship tomorrow

So as I type this, the final berths aboard our ship are being sold and at 08:00 tomorrow a new crew will join to take her to Germany.

Update from the Swedish Trainees.
Day 3 - Thursday 12th
Today we were having a Swedish day on board Kaliakra. We took care of the kitchen and made a typical Swedish dinner, meatballs with potatoes and gravy. Grace from Portugal helped us as well, since we were one swede short. It was very interesting
working with the Bulgarian chef especially since he didn't speak a word of English. It worked out very well and the crew seemed to be satisfied with our Swedish cooking skills. It was also a fun experience cooking with everything moving back and
forth. After the dinner we had a presentation of Sweden, it all went fine. We went to sleep early since my watch was going to start at 0400.
Day 4 - Friday 13th
Chris woke us up at 0315 and we all needed to go on deck. It was raining and we could feel the storm coming in. We started to play a game of Pride and Prejudice but we had to stop, since the weather got worse. The seasickness is starting to appear and
more people joining the green team every day. White team stands strong! The lunch was cancelled since the chef decided it was not safe to cook, so I had some apples and cookies before going to bed and trying to sleep. Rough day but definitely and
experience to remember and I am proud I could handle it so well.

Smyger in ett par rader på svenska här också. Vi svenska vikingar står självklart pall mot dom ökända nordsjö stormarna. Medans nästan hela besättningen sprider spyor både här och där. Mår vi oförtjänt bra. Köttbullarna var mer eller mindre pannbiffar
och hela rätten var ganska bulgariskt inspirerad men alla verkade gilla det och det är huvudsaken. Presentationen av sverige gick väldigt bra och Europas ungdomar vet nu vad en fika är.

Friday 13th August 2010
We started our first watch at 00:00 till 04:00. Around 2 o'clock there was a storm coming. There were probably two of them. They were coming from different sides and colliding just above us, which meant that we will have a rough night ahead. There were
coming waves over one side of the ship, which looked quite scary in the beginning. So, we started to furl few sails to decrease the power to the vessel.
People were wet and tired, but still working on the deck till the end of the watch. Hard work was successful and we were able to go to sleep at 04.00 o'clock. Not for long…. At 06.00 o'clock there was an 'all hands on deck alarm'.
Everyone had to get on the deck because we were tacking in a strong wind and there was a high need of men power. Finally, we went back to our beds for some more sleep, but still some people were working on the deck because a lot of people from other
watches were sea sick and they felt a lack of people. We called a green watch, which was working almost 24 hours per day.
The majority woke up just before the next watch to try having lunch. The storm was still at its peak. Strong wind, rain and rough sea made a lot of people sea sick, which of course made the situation pretty unpleasant. However, we began our watch from
12.00 till 04.00 in the afternoon. We tried to play some games during the watch to build up the mood inside the ship. We played a game called 'pride and prejudice'. It's a game to learn about the other countries and to take away the preconceptions.
Inside the ship most of the people were getting sea sick, so a lot of the trainees stayed on deck even though it was raining. In addition, even the crew of the ship was sea sick… So the weather was challenging. Our last watch was much better because
the storm finished and we could enjoy dry weather with no wind. We could even see the sun! So a lot of people just went outside to chill and relax after a stressful day. We ended our watch in a good mood, looking at the stars and hoping to see nice
weather tomorrow.
Saturday 14th of August started differently! The sun was shining for the first time in four days so the weather was brilliant! We started our watch with a game called "Who am I". It was pretty fun and relaxing. Later that day people started to sunbath
and drying their clothes on the deck; the mood in the ship was much better and it was increasing with every hour. We helped the crew to remove the broken sail; some of us also helped the Captain to secure (hank on) the bramsail. This meant we had to
climb up in the top of the mast and out on the yard; it was an amazing view from up there.
Later in the day we decided to film a music video on the ship. It will involve all the trainees and the crew. We saw few inspiring examples and we decided to make one even better. All this activity and the day is not yet finished….

Storm Adventure

Hello from the Crew,

Today we find we have a new watch in additon to the three usual; Red, White, Blue and now Green.

Yes if you haven't guessed the crew are experiencing the true power of the North Sea with a great storm. Several traines have been ill (and even some of the mentors)however spirits are still high.

We have several sails set at at the time of writing this post (12.25pm) we are doing 7.5Kts, steering 104 degrees and at a position of 56 dgrees 26.577 Minutes North and 001 Degrees 0.371 Minutes East.

Updates on the storms, the first 2 international meals and more will follow tomorrow... when we hope the storm eases!

Blog day 1 Blue Watch

My day started really early this morning: 6 a.m., and this process was like a miracle – supposedly my co-worker Francisco should have been the one waking me up, but ultimately he was snoring like a pig, when I checked him in his room! :)

At 6 a.m like a beautiful princess I just opened my gorgeous eyes like magic and then I started cleaning, having the pleasure to begin with the girls toilet which was really pleasurable. Then I served the breakfast to all the trainees. Afterwards I
climbed the mast which was very scary, but exciting but at the same time.

After lunch we went for a tour in Hartlepool that although it was nice, the weather is really different from my country, it was raining and cold. We had to play a game called tea bag exchange. I decided to go alone and I went to several houses to try
to do the exchange. At first an old lady gave me a vegetarian soup then a big coffee bag then a little boy gave me a lucky stone and then I finally exchanged it for a monkey doll with a certificate that I was known as one of the monkey's crew.

It was really funny and I met many people. At the end of the day we came back to Kaliakra and finally I served dinner. This was a really important day to get to know the crew and practice my English.

I finally discovered my true calling today – being a Garbage woman! :))))

The Exchange Begins: Day 1, Arrival

The day started differently for every person. Some woke up in their own bed, some spent their night on the Newcastle beach, but everyone finally ended up aboard the Kaliakra.
The trainees who arrived early with 2 of the mentors went to do some shopping after the raising of the flag by the crew, which is traditionally done in every port. Food shopping for the ship was a great fun because of the large quantity bought and the
way back to the ship was exciting. Pushing through the crowd with trollies full of food for the journey… After some quick introductions and a speech from the Captain we played an ice breaking game where we tied ourselves up in a knot. It helped to
break down some personal barriers and increased our understanding of team work.

Later in the day we learnt sail and rigging terms in Bulgarian, which was quite a challenge for the majority. Whilst we were learning the terms, some crews from the other ships were making amusing shows for the public. Without the fun and learning
there had to be some paper work done which is a necessity for the trip to go smoothly. Moreover, the drama with the Italian luggage ended… They are getting their stuff back and the Italian day is saved! In the evening there were visitors from the
Swedish Tall ship committee who are organizing the Tall Ship Races in Halmstad 2011.

The captain and some trainees were showing them the ship and shared ideas about the race next year. They enjoyed the tour and left the ship satisfied. The day still has not ended…. Looking forward for the next adventure before sailing!

Last night we finally got our luggage so I could sleep in my sleeping bag with clean clothes!!! That was beautiful…. I slept so well!! So this morning I was ready to climb the mast…it was really fun and I hope to do it again…this morning we also
learned lots of things about the boat because the captain held a sort of lesson and showed us lots of ropes and parts of the boat, he also taught us some words in Bulgarian, that was interesting and I expect we'll learn lots of other words….

This morning's climb to the Mast was really pleasurable – exciting and scary at the same time – and when I was up there, I just wanted to spread my wings and soar, but my security system just wouldn't let me!...

The morning was not too different from the day before. We had the early breakfast, raised the flag and a tour of the ship done by the captain. Then came the interesting part! After some waiting we finally had the opportunity to climb the fore mast. In
was both challenging and exciting, as the tricks with life lines and everything was not easy to get the hold off. Yet, in the end, we successfully got our mast climbing practice and went to have lunch.

Trainees taking part in the Tall Ships Exchange project have received funding from the British Council, as a requirement of the funding the trainees have worked together to produce a da-to-day schedule for the voyage. Whilst the weather, racing requirements and, of course, the Captain will have the final say if all goes to plan; this is what we should be doing.

2010 Sailing Challenge

This blog first appeared in 2009 to enable trainees sailing with AtSea Sail Training aboard Christian Radich to record their thoughts and experiences whilst sailing.

For 2010, forty trainees from eight different countries will join the Bulgarian Tall Ship Kaliakra for the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta. Working as a team they will sail and navigate the ship safely from Hartlepool to Amsterdam.

Ahead of the voyage participants will be invited to post to the blog, and during the voyage this will be a daily event (if communications allow).

Trainees are due to join the ship at 16:00 on the 9^th of August in Hartlepool the voyage finishes in Amsterdam on the 21^st.

Home sweet home - 30-31 of July

Last 24 hours all ship crew and trainees all the night were on their feet. It was because of that, that there were left not very much till the end of the race, but wind was not very good for us and every minute we had to be prepared for tacking and very fast come to battle station.

And in the middle of the day we have had tacked twice and in the afternoon of 30 of July we have crossed the finish line of the race. That evening the sunset was incredible. The rain was coming and we saw sun between horizon of the sea and rain clouds. It was amazing!!!!

Everybody in the ship just stopped and they were enjoying of the sunset... After that has come the final results – Christian Radich in the class A – FIRST!!!!!!

After that Captain gave order to pull up the sails and last hours till we reach my hometown Klaipeda was started. In the last our watch (00.00-04.00) we were so busy that I haven't felt when all preparation jobs where finished – all night we where preparing ship for hers staying in harbor. In that watch we had nice surprise – Grete and Vivi has made pancakes in Norwegian.By the way – this night was the first night when I had possibility to feel what does it means to be in the sea when the rain has come...

After interesting day and short watch we all went to sleep. An I awoke then, when I had possibility to say -”Welcome to Lithuania!” :)

Radich Watch Up date: 8-12 Watch 30th July

This morning we awoke with nervous anticipation of what was going to happen on our watch. The previous night we learnt that we were still first in our class, and that the finish time for the race had been brought forward due to the adverse winds. As it turned out we had very little time to wait as we were waiting the tall ship behind us to tack. When she did this we tacked to cover her. And so began the endless trimming of the sails and halyards to make sure that the boat was travelling at the fastest speed possible. Once this was finally over we just had to sit and wait for the end of the race and for the commands from the captain.

This was a long wait with very little activity as the wind did not vary very much. So little trimming of the large square sails that power the tall ship along through the water was required. At 1600 the captain gathered us on the main deck an told us that we would have to wait and see what the results of the race were.

8-12 watch update 29th July

We just wanted to share with you the best memories from the sunset yesterday, we climbed up to the top of the main mast where we stayed for approximately 45 minutes. The view was more than marvellous the open shimmering sea quite with no other ships on the horizon and the key to this view was the other ships on the horizon. We were watching it from the start to the finish with people sitting on the yards talking taking thousands of pictures or just in silence enjoying the end of the day from the birds view.

In the evening before the sunset we did even common titanic which means some friends at once were standing on the bowsprit.

Amazing moments that connect people. During the night we were supposed to tack, so everyone was expected to be awake and ready to do their duty with the ropes but fortunately nothing like that happened. We managed to sail within the whole night and then after quick breakfast we did the fastest tacking the captain had ever seen. Then the second after 3 min and all the tall ships were behind us. We are first now passing the light house at the end of Gotland. Lying on the foredeck practicing the winners song just in case of the event, the warms us, even if we are in half dreamy dead, because of the murderer’s game which started an hour ago. Let’s see who wins!

Last Day Racing , Murder Game and outline of the next days ahead

Last night when the race results came in the Captain told us that we are still first in our class which is good to hear, we celebrated with applause and then went onto our night watches. News also followed that due to the winds and the fact that many of the ships had not yet passed GOTLAND the race would finish early so that we could grantee all of the ships were able to be in port for the events in Klaipeda

Sailing during the night was good and we had easy watches, allowing for fun and games. One game that was played was the bear game. In this game to people pretend to be PARENTS and give birth to a baby bear. However the parents have to try and stop the baby from being born, whilst the baby has to try to be born. In reality a person has to push through two people who are lying on top of each other and trying to stop the person pushing through the two of them.

Another game which started yesterday is the murder game: here below are the rules:

A GAME OF MURDER

IS ANNOUNCED

· Everyone aboard is invited to play

· The idea of the game is that each person playing will receive a victim (someone else playing the game), a location and weapon which they must use to “kill” their victim.

· Once you have killed someone you then have the task of killing the person they should have “killed”.

· The winner is the person who survives by “killing” everyone else !

Some rules

You can not kill anyone whilst they are on watch, or doing a job / task for the ship.
A murder shouldn’t disturb people sleeping in the accommodation.
You can enlist the people who have died to help you kill someone.
If you kill someone and their victim was supposed to be you, you must come and see Chris, Carl or Sophie who will assign you a new victim.
You must get permission to use a murder tool if the item belongs to anyone aboard the ship and from one of the ships crew if it is a piece of the ships equipment.
If there is a disagreement over a murder this will be settled by the mentors
Sadly, once the game has started it is not practical for new people to join.

With over half of the crew playing “murders” have been happening all over the ship, and as the death toll rises there have been more and more accomplices involved in killing people !

Finally after days of racing at 16:00 today we finished our race at sea – as with many of the vessels in this years race the winds made it impossible for us to reach the finish line in the required time. Having celebrated as a crew (there is a good chance we may have won some prizes) we started to take sails down and prepare the ship for port.

Tomorrow (Friday 31^st) a pilot will join the ship at 0800 and guide us into port. Whilst the racing is over we still have several days of fun planned. Most of Friday will be spent cleaning the ship and making it “ship shape and Bristol fashion” ready for when the ship is open to the public. Saturday will be a busy day, as a reward for a hard work racing we plan a late breakfast, after which we will have the Second ever Egg Drop Competition aboard Christian Radich. Following the egg drop (see next blog post for the egg drop rules) we will have lunch and then prepare for the Crew Parade through the centre of town which will finish at the prize giving ceremony (perhaps Radich will have a few trophies to take home… who knows!). Once back to the ship there will be chance to shower change and then the whole crew can enjoy a party organised for the crews of all the competing vessels.

Sunday morning the whole crew will be up early (perhaps some will not have even been to bed!). Wake up will be 0700 and by 0745 all bags must be packed and on deck. Once the accommodation is clear of bags and personal items, breakfast will be served for everyone and then the big ship clear up will begin. Then by 0930 the voyage will be over, and after what are sure to be many goodbyes and possible tears the crew of Radich will head home to the lives they had before the voyage!

The Great Radich Egg Drop Rules

THE GREAT RADICH

EGG DROP CHALLENGE

2009

The challenge is to transport a raw egg from the platform on the fore mast as far back on the ship as possible without the egg breaking.

You may use any materials aboard the ship, however you must have permission of the person responsible for them (eg: bosun, engineer, cooks or the sergeant)
There is a good chance that your egg may end up overboard – so ensure that you only use things you can afford to loose
The egg and it’s protective packaging must be thrown from the platform and can not be attached to any part of the ship, or another person
Teams should be between 5 & 7 people and as international as possible!
Before the egg drop, each team will give a presentation about the science of their design – points will be awarded for the best presentation
(to be the best you should include all of your group and make it as funny as possible)
Finally to win the egg must be whole and raw when it is collected from the deck (this will be tested!)

Radich At Sea Voyage: From Joining to the Race start

So we have been aboard Christian Radich now for over four days coming together as a crew of 58 trainees from many different countries.

During this short time aboard our crew (made up of over 14 nationalities) have learnt how to climb aloft, set 27 sails, tack a ship and live together in an open Banjeren (the area where we eat and sleep).

This area (the Banjeren) is the full width of the ship and during the day is a large open space where meals are served and people can sit and talk, however at night over 40 hammocks are hung from the ceiling where crew members are gently rocked to sleep by the motion of the boat.

Alongside the challenge of the race, which we take very seriously after all Radich has an excellent reputation to maintain; our stand-by time has been spent learning about each others cultures and countries. During the night watches on the evening of the 27^th each watch took part in the pride and prejudice exercise with great success. The idea of the exercise is to gauge what beliefs and pre conceptions exist amongst the trainees with regards to each country and help to correct them. In turn trainees from each country stand in front of the white board whilst the rest of the watch call out facts and information which they think is true of that country (so for the UK the following were some of the suggested items: Full English Breakfast, The Queen, Monty Python, Top Gear, Pubs and of course Fish and Chips) At the end of the watch we all were left with a better idea of each others countries and looking forward to using our new found knowledge in Lithuania.

For many people one of the most notable challenges of life aboard a tall ship is the fact that crew are needed to climb and work aloft in the rigging, usually once the initial fear and in trepidation of being high aloft is overcome the act of going aloft becomes one of the most sought after tasks for the extra challenges that are posed. However as much as we will always need crew to climb aloft it is important that we have persons on deck who can slack on lines and help the people working high above in the rigging without them we simply could not get tasks done.

For the start of the second race Radich found herself in an ideal location for crossing the start line, a position which also afforded us a great view of the fleet, and saw the press boat taking pictures of us. As a result we couldn’t help taking a photo of the photographers taking pictures of us – especially the well known Man in Black aka Max (www.maxphotographer.com where you can see his tall ships pics).

Many different ships have their own traditions; one of these for Radich is to fly their Pirate Flags whilst racing. These flags have been captured as trophies from many different participating vessels in the race throughout the many years that Radich has participated.

In addition to great food, hot showers a constant supply of fresh coffee there is a great amount of fun and banter (as you would expect when 80+ young people come together). Today one of the trainees was challenged to draw a picture of Radich (see the picture) after an hour we had a fairly accurate depiction of the ship really – what do you think?

Finally at the time of writing this we have rounded our last way point and are now on a direct course for the finish line, whilst the forecast suggests that we could have a lot of tacking ahead of ourselves the going looks good and there could be a suitable reason for a party when we reach port !

Radich Update: From Tuesday 28th July - news from the 4 - 8 Watch, Tacking, Napping and learning

We wake up at 0330 and started our watch at 0400, we saw a beautiful sunrise whilst members of the watch stood look out I had safety watch (which involves checking the ship for fires and making sure that all is well below decks). Some people from our watch made presentations about their countries, so we learnt something about Italy, Finland, Lithuania and France. After that we took a nap, then the Bosun told everyone that we we’re taking and should take our stations. Following the tack the Captain said that it went very well and that we should be happy with our current placing in the race.

25.07.09 Day 1 Blog Entry

We arrived at the Christian Radich in the morning very nervous and found our sleeping places (hammocks!) Once we had unpacked our luggage into the lockers, one of the mentors gave a demonstration of how to get into a hammock which was very amusing.

We then took a walk to see all the other ships and sail boats, that were moored along the river and with so many sail boats it was a long walk.

We all ate dinner together at the ship and then we had some get to know each other games. In the evening we had time to explore Turku and visit some of the bars. Some of us found the hammocks quite uncomfortable while others had a good long sleep !

28 Jul - 8 to 12 Watch - Day three - A night of racing, tacking and continued learning

Today we woke up at 0700 in time for breakfast. The watch started at 0800 where our first task was to tighten some of the sails. As we were so fast at this task we started to learn some of the important knots that are required for the ship.

This turned into a bit of fooling around when Chris, our mentor tied our hands together with ropes linked together like two parts of a chain. We had to try and escape from this, which led to many interesting attempts that failed.

That took even the “smartest” of us at least half an hour before we were begging for help. There was some more problem solving before we had lunch. The captain let us know that we were in first place in our class in the race, yeah!

Race Day - Updates from the 8 - 12

Today is the starting day for the race. Everybody was excited from the early morning, good weather then not too strong winds, good words from the captain which encouraged us to do out best to prepare all of the sails and get ready for the start line.

I was so lucky to have the 8 – 12 watch which allowed me to help with setting the sails – it was more than awesome to be one of the few at the top of the masts and while working to enjoy the other ships which were close to us.

Everyone was getting closer to the start line, we couldn’t be too fast, just not to cross the line before the mid day start, but also we wanted to be very close to the start time even if we had an 20 minute start window – this we managed!

It was much greater than I even expected crossing the start line at 12:02:30 seems more then perfect doesn’t it? The whole crew took part in setting the sails and pulling on the ropes (even the cook) then with the great time, speed and big smiles we could take thousands of pictures of the others who were BEHIND US !

These memories will be in my mind forever - what a spectacular event!

So many huge ships with all sails set – so close to each other, all trying to be the first across the line.

Well, the direction of the wind is not the best for Christian Radich now, but we will do our best to keep the first place. There is a lot to do over the next few days and nights but we have to remember also that the most important thing is the good atmosphere of the event – so keep your fingers crossed for the Christian Radich and her international crew.

Monday, 27 July 2009 4 to 8 Watch - Steering, Climbing all before breakfast

The 4-8 watch woke up about 3.30 a.m. to get ready for our first morning watch. Everyone was sleepy and only half wake. We changed over on the main deck with the 12-4 watch, had some food from the mess. The look out went to the front of the shop for one hour before they changed. The safety watch walks around the ship twice every hour checking for any possible fire. The safety watch then changes every hour. We proceeded by climbing the mast and unpacking the main sail and afterwards we repacked it for practice. We also learnt how to set the sails and the names of some of the endless amounts of ropes. We were taught what ‘tacking’ was and how to do it as at first it seems to be quite complicated but it turns out to be rather easy. I was even allowed to steer the ship which was an amazing experience, I had to follow a course of 090 degrees which is much harder than it sounds. Finally we changed watch with the 8-12 watch on the main deck and afterwards we had a delicious breakfast. Following breakfast some people tried to get some sleep or discussed with others the different cultures they come from and the music they enjoy. At 10.30 a.m. we had a talk with the captain where everyone should be positioned when the race begins. When the race started we let down the sails and pulled on many heavy ropes. We passes the start line quite fast and now we have a good position in the race. At the moment we are surrounded de dozens of other tall ships which gives us an amazing view, plus we are always comparing our position and speed with the other ships. At the moment we are also sailing upwind which means we will be constantly beating against the wind which will require a lot of work as the boat will be frequently tacking/turning which means we have to brace/turn the yards and re-trim the sails. Luckily the weather is still very good and quite sunny. Lets hope all continues for the rest of the race!!

Sunday, 26 July 4 to 8 Watch - Leaving Turku feeling like a VIP

We left Turku around noon. It was amazing how many people were on the shore waving to us. The sea was full of small boats following us from all around and you could see tall masts of ships across the horizon. Even the president of Finland was there giving her greetings! I have never felt this famous before.

The first lunch onboard was such a thrilling experience: bread, raspberry jam, and Norwegian got cheese…yummy!! The most terrifying moment in my whole life was when we were supposed to climb up the mast. I have never been so afraid of heights before especially when we looked down onto the rolling waves although the support of the other trainees and the crew kept me alive. Climbing back down onto the deck was a lot easier than climbing up, and next time I might climb ‘even’ higher.

I had my first watch at 4pm. My special duty was to look out across the horizon for possible danger objects such as other large boats, buoys and fishing nets. If you spot something you have to ring an old-fashioned bell in order to warn the helmsman at the stern of the ship. We also learned to coil ropes and how to brace the yards (turn them).

We completed a lot of training so that we would be well prepared for the race tomorrow and win again!!

The 26 June - an update from the 12 - 4 watch

It's been quite a day today at Christian Radich and we haven´t even finished for for today!

This morning we got our last good nights sleep as we started the real work today, which meant dividing us into three watches. From now on there´s going to be hammocks hanging from the ceiling every hour of the day with grumpy, tired people inside them who have given their best in keeping the amazing ship in action, clean and safe.

We started the day with important themes like safety on board. The experienced crew also took us through a quick history of Christian Radich and explained the whole function of the ship. The trainees went through an evacuation exercise and we got to try on A-class life jackets and survival suits. At 12 o´clock we finally left Turku and millions of waving hands as enthusiastic viewers by the river Aura and on the islands wished us safe winds. Harriet said she felt like a celebrity waving back at them.

After the meal I was to overcome my worst fear: the fear of heights. The trainees got to climb up the rigging one by one and hang on top of the yard waiting for the others to reach it too. I think it must have been one of the most frightening experiences of my life! I kept going on with tears in my eyes and tried to manage my shaking feet. Afterwards I felt proud of what I had achieved and everyone else seemed to have enjoyed the exercise as well :).

I´m now waiting for my 12 to 4 watch to start and listen to the snoring from the hammocks as the trainees prepare themselves for a long night. Excited...

27th June - An update from the 12 - 4 Watch - The Race has started

The race has started!

Yesterday we left Turku and sailed out to sea. I was starting to feel afraid about sea sickness, but what can I say now...I feel not very bad, but not very good at all!

Today in the morning 3.00-4.00 I was doing look-out. It was amazing!!!!! I had a possibility to see, how the sun was raising up and the new day was coming.

After a few hours of sleep, we all were woken up, because we had to cross the starting line. A lot of tall ships were around us and in the short breaks after doing some trainee jobs we had the possibility to enjoy the beautiful (again :) ) view around us.

In our watch time we had our instructor briefing about our position at sea, an interesting lesson about knot’s and...how to pull up and pull down the sails. They all are very huge and they look very, very nice from inside the ship and the from outside.

After some time, the captain was doing a briefing, where he said, that we have crossed line as he expected and we all are very happy about this!

Now we have some free time, I think I use it for sweet afternoon sleep...because everybody from the crew is saying, that for the next few days will not have a lot of possibilities to do it.. :)

26 Jul 09 - From the 8 - 12 Watch - Day 2

After a breakfast brunch we had emergency stations and fire drills and it was funny to see everyone trying to put on the lifejackets.

We left the port with the help of a Finish tug boat named “Fart” to the cheers of the crowd, and along with the rest of the Tall Ships 2009 Baltic Fleet left the fabulous host post of Turku. Sounding a salute to the city we were all nearly deafened by the ship’s horn.

We were then shown around the ship and told about the rules of the ship. In the afternoon we had our first climb up the rigging, which for some was a very emotional experience, but great fun none the less. This was done to the sound of trumpets and the waving of the boats around us – making this an experience you never forget. The watch system also started with a gentle breaking in, including an introduction to the sails and the watches already starting to get competitive – at the time of posting this message we have just 30 minutes before we start our first watch !

25 Jul 09 - From the 8 - 12 Watch - Day 1

Arrived at the Christian Radich in the morning all very nervous. We were shown where we were to sleep in hammocks. This came with a very amusing introduction and demonstration of how to get into a hammock, which was filmed much to consternation of out mentor. We then squeezed our kit into our lockers and then given some free time to wonder round. We walked around the boats which took along time to do since there are so many boats taking part in the event. We came back in time for dinner, which was followed by some get-to-know-each-other games. We then had some free time to explore the nearby pubs. Our mentor enjoying them slightly too much and not coming onboard till the early hours of the morning. Some found the hammocks slightly uncomfortable but others had a good long sleep.

Early Friday morning I flew out from London Heathrow bound for the Finish city of Turku, one of five host ports for this summer’s Tall Ships Race, managed by Sail Training International (www.sailtraininginternational.org).

Upon arrival I join the Norwegian Tall Ship Christian Radich to compete, hopefully winning, the second race leg for this year’s tall ships race. Joining me are over fifty young people from a variety of different countries, all brought together through an international exchange organised by ATSEA Sail Training.

Over the course of the race, when ever we have signal posts will be published to this blog giving you updates about life aboard Christian Radich and what activities we have been up to !
